Jesus as the Beatitudes

  • “Poor in Spirit”

    • Luke 22:42, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

  • “Mourn”

    • Matthew 23:37, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”

  • “Meek”

    • Matthew 21:5, ““Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

  • “Hunger/thirst for righteousness”

    • John 2:12-17, “And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

  • “Merciful”

    • Hebrews 2:17 ,”Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

  • “Pure in Heart”

    • 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (or Heb 10:22 - a purity that begets purity to the impure)

  • “Peacemaker”

    • Colossians 1:20, “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

  • “Persecuted for Righteousness”

    • Isaiah 53:7, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
          yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.”

Jesus not only speaks the beatitudes, he is the beatitudes.
